Company History

Nearly half a century ago, in 1973, the late Anthony A. Mele incorporated Mele & Mele & Sons, Inc. in Braddock, PA, as a residential and commercial landscape contracting firm.

From these humble beginnings, the company shared its first office space with Mele Brothers Florists, a local business owned and operated by Anthony and his wife, Dorothy. With a shared space and family partnership, Mele & Mele & Sons, Inc. provided interior plant installation and maintenance in addition to general landscape construction.

In 1977, Anthony W. Mele, known to friends and colleagues as “T,” and Joseph A. Mele, joined the family operation. “T” held the position of Vice President & Treasurer and Joe as General Superintendent in charge of field operations.

There are many factors that have contributed to Mele’s ongoing success. Among them, hard work and perseverance that paid off as the company quickly prospered

The need for expansion became clear as the company kept growing, so a one-quarter acre site was purchased along the Pennsylvania Railroad in nearby Swissvale. But the company soon outgrew this as well. In 1982, Mele & Mele & Sons, Inc. purchased a tract of land with several one-story and high bay buildings from Koppers Company, alongside the Monongahela River in neighboring Rankin, PA.

The buildings were renovated to accommodate expanding operations, and today, the six-acre complex comprising ten buildings serves as the headquarters of Mele & Mele & Sons, Inc., a site officially recognized as One Mele Place.

Elem Corporation was then formed as an open-shop landscape company allowing participation in both union and non-union contracts. In 2006, Elem Corporation was renamed to Mele Landscape Contractors, Inc.

The company’s growth continued with the formation of Mele Mechanical, LLC in 2008, a specialized division dedicated to providing plumbing construction solutions.

When Anthony Mele died in 2010, “T” assumed the position of President & CEO.

Between 2012 and 2014, the next generation joined Mele & Mele & Sons, Inc. and the company once again expanded their lines of business. Today, as President, Anthony M. Mele leads us into new and exciting areas of growth with a firm commitment to the original core values. He oversees the heavy and civil construction division, and as Vice President, Michael Mele is responsible for the asphalt paving and milling division.

There are any number of influences that have impacted Mele’s continuing success over the years, including a knowledgeable professional staff that takes pride in their work, long-term employees who share management’s vision, a well-maintained fleet, the employment of current technology, and an emphasis on connecting with our company’s clients.
